Your Wi-Fi Network
One of the responsibilities of hosting a wireless network is protecting it with a password. Without a password, hackers or anybody else within range can access your network. Such freeloaders can slow your own use of your network by downloading large files, or they can cause real trouble by accessing the data on your network computers.
Which Password?
A Linksys typically has two passwords: The first, which is called the "admin password" and is used in tandem with a username, is required to change any of the settings on the unit. The second password, the "Wi-Fi password," is required to connect wirelessly to the network. However, to change the settings wirelessly, you must know both passwords. To change the settings using a computer that is hardwired to the Linksys router, you only need to know the admin password.
The Settings You Need
You can also hardwire computers or printers to your wireless Linksys router.
No proprietary software is required to configure a Linksys; it uses a standard browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Google Chrome. You will need to know the router's IP address as well as the user name and admin password. The default IP setting is 192.168.1.1; enter that number into the URL bar of your browser. For the User and Password fields, enter the default, "admin," in both fields. If you or someone else changed these settings after the initial installation, you will need to enter the new settings. Otherwise you will be forced to reset the router to its original factory settings.
Resetting the Password
Once you're on the Linksys configuration page, you will have to click on the "Wireless" tab on the top of the page, then on the "Wireless Security" subtab below it. Here, you will be able to see (or change) the password. If you want to remember it, make a screen capture of the settings and store it in a safe place. Remember, if you change the Wi-Fi password, you will have to change it on all the other computers that are connected to your wireless network.
Starting From Scratch
If you can't access the configuration page of the Linksys, you will have to reset it to its original factory settings. To reset your unit, leave the Linksys plugged in, and depress the "Reset" button on the back, using a pen. Hold the button in for at least 40 seconds; once the lights stop blinking, you will have to access the configuration page. Enter 192.168.1.1 into the URL bar on your browser and enter "admin" in both the User and Password fields.
