Ecstasy in Cebu
THE arrest of a British national and his Filipina partner in a Mandaue City bar Saturday for selling Ecstasy pills to customers opens a new front in the fight against illegal drugs.
It is not a new drug; it is not the first arrest made in line with the selling of Ecstasy tablets. But it was the first recent case to involve a foreigner and the selling of the drug inside his own bar.
Agencies involved in the fight against illegal drugs have long known about the presence of Ecstasy tablets (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA) in Cebu but the profile of the user is changing. Ecstasy is also known as a club drug or a stimulant popular among club or bar patrons. Recent reports showed, however, not only foreigners or the wealthy who can afford the drug use it but also young partygoers, students and even taxi drivers.
the arrests in Cebu and Bacolod signal the need to seriously look into the Ecstasy networks before use of the drug becomes more widespread.
