umm.. the filipino school curriculum classifies all mentioned above as dialects. there are at least 8 major dialects as per filipiniana studies. the only other philippine language i know of other than filipino is those from the ivatans of batanes. if you hear them speak, you cannot identify any filipino term used. their language is from that of their austro-polynesian ancestors.
the cebuanos can only dream that their dialect becomes the national language.

ohhh, absolutely...if spain never transferred the capital to manila....cebuanos are a proud people. actually when cebu insist to learn tagalog, the former governor of cebu (i forgot who he was) even change the lyrics of the phil national anthem to cebuano to pride itself over manila. in a linguistically diverse country who is very regionalistic, tagalog should not have been put into the spotlight after being declared the national language to avoid "imperialism" of some sort over the southern provinces who doesn't speak it. tagalogs should not act as if they are the more powerful than the visayans just because the government and media are all based there and forcing other people to learn their language and end up being laughed about because of their visayan accent. being filipino doesn't necessarily mean you have to speak tagalog because this might lead to unfortunate civil war or secession from the republic from those who oppose manila rule. well apart from language, culture and tradition also differs in the philippines, e.g. the moros in mindanao. with the controversy hounding the MOA on the bangsamoro juridical entity on ancestral domain, its a prime example that the south wants to be independent from manila and yet still part of the republic, which under a federal system provides!
the philippines could have retained spanish (if only the friars were enthusiastic about spreading the language) as the lengua franca to act as a "neutral" language of the country and level other native languages to avoid regionalistic sentiments. i guess, cebuanos were thankful the americans asserted the english language so that they can have a better grip against the tagalogs! and as #18 said, english is much preferred over tagalog when in the visayas and mindanao. the south loves a traveler who travels down south and speaks visayan dialects or english and hates a traveler who speaks tagalog when in fact its not "tagalogland" after all.
