If your new to photography, may I suggest do not go for a DSLR yet. Its pricey, heavy and you really do need to read-up or pay for seminars to learn the trade.
Find a 2nd hand pro-sumer camera (powershot S series, Powershot G series or the nikon and Lumix equivalents) to practice first.
These camera's have all the settings and manual controls of DSLR's yet not the bulk and the wallet burning cost of Lens acquisitions. When yo finally outgrow the pro-sumer cam and can go through the settings like a pro - then dive into the DSLR world.
Try the canon S and SX series (S5, SX10, SX20, SX1is, etc.) with a speedlight (nissin or 430ex). For the same range (wide angle to Zoom) a 2nd hand set will cost you about 1/5th of what you would need for a DSLR and about four lenses.
Sample shots: (mine)
from S5
from SX1
D90 + a lens almost as expensive as the camera
Dili naman kaayo ma pildi ang pro-sumer. Check the fotos on Flicker.

Its the Archer that counts, not the bow and arrow. hehe.
Hope this helps and does not add to the confusion. Good Luck.
@ tuscania
and you are selling one right? ^^
Yes because moved on to D90 na just like you. But made half a dozen international trips with just the powershots S5 and SX1. In all occasions did not dis-appoint. Even for one coming from SLR film.
Moved on to D90 because with my 5 year old son having more activities, need a faster focus unit and also one that would do better inside the auditorium for the programs.
If not for the little boy - would still be using the SX1 or get the new Nikon s9100.
You were happy with your bridge cam when you were starting right?
@all
thanks for all the info guyz. thats a good suggestion sir tus. ill place that into account. id say im still a begginer. but i have handled SLR's already. My brother owns one. Canon (forgot the name) ill just tell you when i see him this week end sir. So im quite familiar with the setup and the Timpla2x (my brothers term) hahahah. But your suggestion is quite logical.
