The Philippines' own Smart Communications is participating in this year's Mobile World Conference, and they just unveiled a new product. Techies, say hello to the Netphone, an Android device that lets you enjoy a localized mobile Web experience in bite-sized chunks.
The Netphone fits perfectly into Smart's sachet surfing plans because unlike other Android devices, the Netphone is Wholesale Applications Community (WAC)-enabled. WAC is a global alliance of the world’s leading telecom operators, application developers, handset manufacturers, and operating-system owners that is defining open-industry applications standards. In simple speak, WAC lets developers make applications that will work across all versions of Android. That's whack.

With WAC, the Smart Netphone gains the advantage of having customized Smart Apps pre-installed; the display unit in Barcelona had a Jollibee Delivery app. Imagine being able to have a Regular Yum meal delivered to anyone in the Philippines from anywhere in the world. And what about the payment? Well, they can take the techie route via Smart Money or the old-fashioned route via COD.
Other locally made apps that will let you do more than just order burgers are also expected to follow in Jollibee's footsteps flight path, so if Smart plays its cards right, this P5,000-P7,000 Froyo device could very well be their next big hit.
