Default Forget College, start working now!

So with more people coming around to the idea that maybe Altucher is onto something (vs. being on something), the money manager and author is back with a follow-up: The 8 Alternatives to College:

    • -- Start a business.
    • -- Work for a charity.
    • -- Travel the world.
    • -- Create art.
    • -- Master a sport.
    • -- Master a game.
    • -- Write a book.
    • -- Make people laugh.

"Whenever I suggest 'don't send your kids to college' a lot of very smart people invariably come back with the response, ‘well what else should they do?'," Altucher writes on his blog. "So I figure I will help people out by coming up with a list and try to handle the criticisms that will certainly arise even before they arise. I can do this because I have a college degree. So I've learned how to think and engage in repartee with other intelligent people."

College just teaches us to be EMPLOYEES!

Forget stock market if you think you can play it without basic knowledge in finance .... you are basically gambling away your money.

I work for the stock exchanges now as a gateway developer for TSE, SGX, CME and other European bourses. No matter how much algo trading (intelligence) we put into our algorithmic trading engine, there are still traders (specially who deal with spreads), who are dumb, relies more on luck and gut feel rather than carefully calculated risks. In the end, they lose more money than they invest.

Wa ko nag trade. Invest akoa for long term. Money cost averaging akong gamit. Investing in a small amount monthly sa mga blue chip stock

    Investing and trading are different

    Investing - long term
Trading- u can buy stock and sell it within a day or an hour. This requires much more technical analysis skills.

So, nag invest ra ko. Im not into trading

I agree with Cory1986, I'm also doing this just recently through CitisecOnline =) They have this EIP program where you can start at a lesser cost. If you want to secure your future, I advise investing in the stock market. And I'm sure you'll be retiring as millionaires. Not just depending on your pension.

    And I'm only 22 =)

College is basically a way for you to have a fallback.
Yes, you might be right they just train you to become employees.
But being an employee isn't always a bad thing.
Not taking such a foundation is a great risk.
Sadly, only a lucky few are able to overcome such risk.

If you are young (let's say below 25) and well off (You don't have to be filthy rich)
I think it is not a waste of time to spend them in college.

I would like to warn you that businesses are risky and is always a potential money black hole.
Charities in the Philippines isn't as rewarding as one would think, most of the money supposedly going to these charities end up in politicians' pockets.
Travelling the world is nice if you are rich (Well truly not for the middle-class)
Art is cheap in the Philippines (Law of supply and demand)
The last few statements obviously relies on your talents, which would make it nice to remember that most people are not as talented as one could hope to be.

So, I salute to the lucky few who have overcome the College route, but the not so lucky, go to college and make the most of it!
