MANILA, Philippines - Operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Western Visayas arrested a fake priest in an entrapment operation on Monday afternoon.
The suspect was identified as Charles Funtanilla, 41, of Dumanggas, Iloilo province.
The suspect was holding a "Mass" at a residence in Ledesma St., City Proper when he was nabbed by the NBI agents.
According to Jim Feliciano, a complainant, Funtanilla offered him a mass service. However, Feliciano was surprised when the suspect asked for donations after the mass.
Funtanilla’s modus had been done several times at the internet station owned by Feliciano.
When Feliciano checked the records at the Archdiocese of Jaro, he found out that Funtanilla’s name did not come up as belonging to any religious congregation.
Aside from pretending that he is a priest, the NBI also found out that the suspect is also connected to illegal recruitment activities.
NBI Special Investigator John Katipunan said they are preparing the necessary documents for the filing of charges against Funtanilla.
The suspect has been temporarily placed under the custody of NBI Region 6.
