Just saw this last night and was in awe. Devastatingly beautiful and blastfully unforgettable. Malick fans should definitely check this out.

Of all his films, this is probably my favorite. Badlands, Days of Heaven, The New World were all brilliant. But this and The Thin Red Line are two of the most emotionally connecting of his films. For personal reasons, and because this is very autobiographical, I love this more.

Others interested must know that isn't your usual film. Comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey is apt but I think the most appropriate comparison should be made with Andrei Tarkovsky's Zerkalo (The Mirror, 1975). The mother character played by Jessica Chastain reminds so much of the mother character in The Mirror. And the music. Ohhh, the music. Man it was so very The Mirror. Probably why I loved this movie so much because The Mirror is one of my very favorite films. The narrative too is very The Mirror.

It's basically a stream of consciousness/film poem that is a contemplative depiction of a man in midlife crisis (played by Sean Penn) so you get flashes of memories by both Sean Penn's characters and even the formation of the universe up to the birth and death of dinosaurs.

The most interesting point was the fact that it only took 20 minutes for the universe to form but longer to reminisce the main character's birth to teenage years, in a way stating that our biographical recollection of 10-15 years lasts more than the universe's billions of years in the making because of emotional attachments that linger. And gosh, that universe creation was so breathtaking!

Probably the most resounding message was in the first lines:
"There were two ways through life - the way of nature and the way of grace. You have to choose which one you'll follow."

And interestingly the film goes to show that even in the most ferocious character of nature, grace is present. The big bangs that occurred throughout the creation of the universe were scary looking as heat and fire bellows but at the same time they create nice looking caricatures that are so beautiful. When the asteroids hit Earth to form life, from afar it looked so serene and calm but on closer inspection, they created blasts of red fire, happening before life was formed. This theme goes further into the main character's household. Even fierce nature father (Brad Pitt) had hints of grace when he fell in love, or when they had a child. And only with grace can you counter and understand fierce nature. And this is greatly depicted by the mother character, representing grace.

The cinematography (by Emmanuel Lubezki) was astounding, the acting (Pitt, Chastain, McCracken and even Fiona Shaw) was brilliant, the score outstanding. There's nothing more you could want for in a movie. This is a superb must-see for all hardcore film lovers!!!

You should watch DAYS OF HEAVEN!

It's a shame coz The Tree of Life is really awesome to see on the big screen. The visuals were really breathtaking, especially during the creation of the universe. Ni-review gyud dayon ko for another 2.5 hours right after sa first viewing nako.. hehe..

Anyways, I hope you find the opportunity to watch this and 2 of his other films, including The New World. Di man pud siya lisod i-catch up kay 5 pa man iyang movies so far. For me The Tree of Life is his most ambitious and most accomplished philosophically. In short, it is by far his best film.

Well, to each his own cinema, man.. hehe. You do realize that you can't base your opinion on the trailer alone, coz the trailer doesn't give you anything. What it does though is it piques your curiosity, which is what trailers are supposed to be. Not like the usual trailers nowadays that ruin the movie by revealing its major plot twists within 3 minutes... hahaha
