Councilor wants boxing clinics to search for 'the next Manny'
After Manny Pacquiao's victory, a Cebu City councilor said he wants the Cebu City Sports Commission to build up its boxing clinics in the barangays.
These clinics, said Councilor Alvin Dizon, may help the city discover "the next boxing hero".
Dizon, who chairs the council's committee on housing, also wants the sports commission to expand its boxing program and include the urban poor and resettlement areas.
"Cebu City hopes to discover a new breed of good boxing fighters in the mold of the Filipino champion Manny Pacquiao from our city's barangays," said Dizon in his resolution.
"The program is also in line with the local government's thrust to keep a training pool of amateur boxers who will be representing the city in various boxing tournaments in other parts of the country," he added.
Dizon will propose that the sports commission provide free boxing gloves for each child or teenager from a poor family who signs up for the boxing clinics.
The clinics should "incorporate valuable lessons on gang prevention and drug abuse deterrence, to those kids who are truly interested in the sport of boxing," he added.
Dizon said Pacquiao's latest victory shows "Filipino's can prevail over any challenges".
"The lesson we can learn from Manny Pacquiao is that focus and determination will help you achieve your goals," said Talisay City Vice Mayor Alan Bucao in a separate interview.
"As you can see, whenever he (Pacquiao) fights, criminal incidents and conflicts are stopped. It proves that we are united and focused in one goal, and that is to support him," Bucao added.
Except for two mauling incidents in different barangays, Talisay City stayed peaceful during the Pacquiao-Margarito bout, said a police official.
SPO1 Oliver Dacua, Talisay City Police Station on-duty desk officer, said that two mauling incidents in barangays San Roque and Tanke were reported to their office.
In Barangay San Roque, tanods escorted Joselito Fulgo, 36, to the police station after he was arrested for allegedly hitting Florencio Dejacto, 43, with a gin bottle.
Dacua said that at 1:30 p.m. yesterday, Fulgo was drinking with a buddy, when a drunk Dejacto came in and challenged everyone he passed to a fistfight.
Dejacto allegedly challenged Fulgo to a fight, but the latter refused and even warned the former to stop.
But Dejacto didn't heed Fulgo, which led him to smash a gin bottle over the other guy's face.
Tanods who heard of the ruckus arrested Fulgo and took Dejacto to a nearby hospital.
In Barangay Tanke, Oscar Dabatos, 66, was on his way to attend to a funeral when he was invited by a drunken Jason Napala to have a drink with him.
But when Dabatos refused, an irked Napala allegedly tried to stab him with a screwdriver. Luckily, Dabatos dodged the attack.
When Dabatos tried to ask Napala why he tried to stab him, the suspect allegedly punched him in the face instead.
Despite these two incidents, Police Chief Henry Biņas said it was generally peaceful in the city during the fight.
Pay-per-view telecasts were aired in some areas in Talisay City, such as the Talisay City Sports Complex in Barangay Poblacion and the Poblacion Barangay Hall, which were sponsored by Barangay Captain Teodoro Belleza.
