Indie 'Amigo' received warmly in London film fest

American writer-director John Sayles’ independent film “Amigo,” which depicts America’s violent incursion into Philippine soil in the 1890s, is receiving excellent reviews in this year’s London Film Festival.
“Amigo,” which was shot in its entirety in Bohol, stars veteran Filipino actors including Joel Torre, Ronnie Lazaro, Bembol Roco, Pen Medina, Irma Adlawan and Rio Locsin.
Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper, as well as “No Country For Old Men’s” Garrett Dillahunt, is also in the cast.
In an interview with the ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau, Sayles, who is known for painting political slants in his films, says he is ready to accept criticism that might be hurled at “Amigo.”
The director was quoted as saying, “I think it’s a good thing for them to think about it...that it really happened and that some of the underlying… the racism was underlying that war, the greed... because a lot of people were very open then that we are doing this because we are making money, because we want to open up the Chinese market and we need a calling station. So, the Philippines is on the way to China, so why don’t we take it over.”
In earlier interview, Sayles admitted he was inspired to do the film after several visits to the archipelago.
His idea came to fruition when he met Torre, who introduced him to local production outfits.
Sayles heaped praises on local actors and the production crew he worked with for the film. He encouraged other Western filmmakers to do more movies in the Philippines.
The film is set to premiere in Los Angeles, California on Nov. 6.
