Default Nuclear Energy Source? What do you think?

For the past few months, we are experiencing rotational brownouts. Cebu has been experiencing this due to the fast-growing economy. A lot of investment are in the pipeline, yet the government have not addressed the power shortage issue.

Some investors used a so called clean coal technology. But environmentalists oppose this due to environment and health hazards that it brings. They suggested to use renewable energy but it is not viable yet due to its high cost.

Nuclear energy source is widely used in other developed countries. They are enjoying its benefits for decades now. But the Philippines is hesitant to adapt because of its risk also. The World was shaken to what had happened in Chernobyl, Russia. But that was an isolated case. During Marcos' time, Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was built but remained unused. I believe we are still paying for it. The question is, must the economy suffer because of these concerns?

I am in favor of Nuclear Energy!!! What do you think fellow istoryans? Those who are against this, please state any alternatives.

Very bad idea, we can't even build roads properly. To start building nuclear reactors at this stage is inviting disaster. Remember USA & Russia have both experienced nuclear catastrophe and they struggled to contain the problem even with their very substantial resources.

These happened a long time ago. For sure there are ways to prevent these from happening again. Those are isolated case too. Many developed nations are using nuclear as energy source. We can tap their expertise. We can invite experts to assist us here.

wind power is effective also. naa naman proposal si greg sanchez na mogamit ana sa una pa.
    just like ilocos.

geothermal can do also, naa pay daghang unexplored na pwede gamitan ug geothermal.

hydropower plants are less possible due to climate change and drought during summer.

nuclear sa bataan nasayang lang, wala jud na ka andar maski ka isa daw.

there are man alternatives source of power, ang blema lang is ang fundings.

Not all that long ago, I can still clearly remember Chernobyl. Consider that radioactive materials such as plutonium -239 can take 24,000 years to break down. Nuclear power IMO really isn't suitable for a developing country. Just look at how poorly our emergency services responded during the recent bus hijacking and then ask yourself if you would trust them to manage a situation which had the potential to render the whole of Cebu uninhabitable and poison land in Malaysia, China and Vietnam?

True, but you have to train the personnel here for it to run efficiently. But how long do you think will these personnel work for the Philippine-based nuclear power plant before applying or going abroad? They'll have to hire experts again and train new personnel. It's a vicious cycle in here. It'll just be a stepping stone for engineers to abroad.

Don't get me wrong, I believe we do need a better energy source. A nuclear power plant here is an option, but it poses several limitations or considerations before we ought to operate one.

Nuclear power carries too many risks that outweighs the benefits. Let us not even consider it as an option. Let Cebu instead be among the pioneers for alternative, renewable energy resources or systems.

Nuclear power plants need to be built in wide flat areas, which Cebu (a thin ribbon-shaped island) does not have. Why invest in nuclear power plants when the Visayas islands (which are all inter-connected via submarine power cables) have natural sources like geothermal, hydroelectric and wind energy sources.

Besides, the demand for power is not that high. Who would invest billions of US dollars for a 1,000-MW nuclear power plant (the smallest for nuclear) when the total demand for the entire Visayas is less than 1,000 MW? Who will pay for the excess capacity -- consumers!

    My two cents.
