“Insiang” is Lino Brocka’s masterpiece of a girl’s coming of age in Manila’s slums.
Insiang lives in a shanty with her mother and Dado– her mother’s lover who lustfully pines for young Insiang only to consummate his desire for the young girl through rape.
Insiang runs to her mother for help only to be turned away and abandoned. Her innocence destroyed, Insiang decides to take revenge on those who betrayed her.
Lav Diaz’s austere yet intimate epic that carefully details the 16 year history of one Filipino family, an impoverished farming clan headed by a stern matriarch whose word is Law, from the rice paddies in the early ’70s to the dog-eat-dog streets in the late ’80s, when the Marcos regime meets its end.
The film runs for 593 minutes (approximately 10 hours) and ranks among the longest films in the world of all time.
