Default Body modification…. an art? or treating nature without respect?

It is quite eerie how people try to alter nature’s virgin and almost perfect human body just to satisfy the hunger of a not-so- very-normal-mind kind of people (im sorry to say this). Being unique is cool but trying to look like an animal than human for the sake of their so-called art is somewhat disturbing. Some or most people just want to grab a high post of attention in the community by making themselves unique, but hey for all we know everyone is unique. No body in this divergent universe has the same fingerprints or even same natural facial structure.

Body modification covers mostly of the following, tattoos, piercing, brandings, scarifications, holes for suspensions, saline injection to the genitalia, permanent horns etc. Few of the most popular are extreme body piercing, facial tattoo (Mike Tysons) and slicing of the tongue (ewwwww). I saw a picture of a man splitting his tongue that looks like snakes coming out from his mouth, and another man tattooed his entire body as of a leopard spots.

But my question is, are this people doing it respect himself or herself as a person, as a sacred being? Aren’t they limiting their world for doing this – Jobs, opportunities…? Maybe it depends on your life style and work, but do you think going this extreme worth it? What’d you think?

sakto man expressing oneself and having those things is an art but if it is too much then ewan ko lang...

mas it would be nicer to look clean all the time without those tattoos and piercing except for girls(having earings)

yes everything is an art, but up to what extent should we consider this an art? i always respect people making a difference for the sake of art but gong extreme is a diiferent story. That's what im pointing out. This body modification maybe going under ground now adays but slowly it is trying to get attention and acceptance specially with the help media and technology.

going back to my question, is it an art or disrespect?...

Before everything What does one mean by art? the answer actually depends on ones definition of art.

art is always been subjective....some people may like like it others may not, but just to express my own opinion regarding going extreme on body modification. i always respect what other people think and do. Thats why i said wht do you think about the subject matter?

I'm not quite clear and exact with this Body modification...is it an art? it depends on the indiividual and what they're trying to obtain or accomplish for themselves. I dont believe it is disrespecting nature or what God has naturally given you as far as appearance goes but anything over the norm like looking so eccentric as is the case with Michael Jackson, i think he has gone overboard with his looks. I would just leave myself with some imperfections because its just the physical aspect everybody loses it at some point in life. Even if you have a total body makeover and go for those marketing hype of cosmetic surgeries, which is a multi-billion dollar industry these days by the way, we are so swamped with advertisements and consumerism is high up there that we lose touch of our ability to appreciate ourselves and what we were naturally born with. I think its better to capitalize and put emphasis on what you already have.

    Good point Streetcar!

I guess for the people who are doing that, it's not disrespecting. It's art, an expression of one's self, they would say. Why is it okay to pierce the ears but not any other part of the body? Well, that's the norm - ears only. But who makes the norm. Surely, the first time ear-piercing was invented, it was also considered taboo or even "disrespectful". But as more and more "not-so-very-normal-minded" people of that time did it, it gradually became a common thing. And so these days we no longer consider that as taboo.

It's also a cultural thing. Just watch Taboo in National Geo.

I'm not for it but im also not against it.
