CEBU, Philippines - An estimated 45,000 people flocked to the grounds of the Lapu-Lapu City Hall last Tuesday night for the grand proclamation rally of Lakas-NUCD-KAMPI party led by standard bearer Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro, Jr. and running mate Eduardo "Edu" Manzano.
Teodoro focused his message on reform in governance and programs. He also expressed gratitude to the Radazas for standing by him and that he did not expect such a huge crowd.
Many times the crowd shouted “Daog na,” with Teodoro pausing temporarily to show his appreciation.
Tedoro visited the towns of Medellin, Daanbantayan, Bogo, Danao City and capped the tour in Lapu-Lapu.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Arturo Radaza, who is seeking the congressional seat for the lone district and his wife Paz, the mayoralty seat, welcomed Teodoro, Manzano and senatorial candidates Rey Langit and Ramon Guico.
Mrs. Radaza said the strength of the Lakas-Kampi CMD in the city was manifested when thousands attended the rally. She said the Deretso 3, a slogan for the administration in the city, said they are supporting not just the tandem but the entire senatorial slate of Lakas.
“Kaning six ka mga senador nga naa sa Lakas, amo usab kining suportahan,” Paz told The FREEMAN.
But she said the remaining six candidates include former Cebu Gov. Emilio “Lito” Osmeņa, former senators Serge Osmeņa and Franklin Drilon, reelectionist senators Miriam Santiago and Juan Ponce Enrile, and Gwendolyn Pimentel.
During the campaign speech, Mrs. Radaza maintained her stand not to attack her opponents in the race – Junard Chan and Efrain Pelaez – but rather presented her programs and plans if she wins in the election.
If she wins, Paz will be the first woman to be elected mayor in Lapu-Lapu.
Former vice mayor Norma Patalinghug also attended the rally, which started at about 7:00 in the evening and ended up almost 12:00 midnight, where Oponganons lined up and waited for national candidates.
Teodoro and his party arrived almost 10 in the evening. It was clear that Teodoro and Manzano were a hit with the crowd.
The rally ended with a 10-minute fireworks display.
