i went to the vet today and she told me that my 2 month old Shih Tzu has "umbilical hernia". She told me that if I have plans to breed her, she needs to be operated first which will costs me around 5k. I was about to cry and I thought it's a critical condition. I was expecting that Jia has no health defects.
Then, I read some articles on the net about umbilical hernia. It says "Generally, by the time the pup is six months old, the umbilical hernia will shrink and disappear on its own".
I then knew that his sire has one too but dis appeared eventually according to the breeder. I hope Jia's will be gone too when she turned 6 months. I know St. Francis will remove this defect from her.

From what I read, hernia may be inherited or may also be caused by excessive pulling of the umbilicus by the dam when the pup was born...

I had a female shihtzu-poodle who had umbilical hernia but she lived a relatively long life (14 years).
I also had a mix dachshund puppy who had umbilical hernia but when he turned almost 3mos it disappeared.
And I have a chow with umbilical hernia, when she turned 6mos, I decided to have it fixed as per vet's advise, it cost me 6k.

Its not necessarily a threat to the dog's health unless it grows large since it may trap a portion of the dog's intestines. But if its small and stays that size (or maybe shrinks through age) and the dog is healthy then there's nothing to worry about.
