Dan, I suggest you indicate your budget for the lens and from there, we'll identify kung unsay best portrait lens for that budget. But if you'd really insist, get the 50mm f/1.8... if you have a bigger budget, the 85mm (f/1.8 or better yet the f/1.4) would surely be a great portrait lens.

    hope this helps...

if i'm not mistaken, naay AF-S version ang 85mm. i-check lng, kay murag f/1.4 to. but i'm sure it's very expensive.

however, the 50mm will do magic if you just know how to use it in portraiture... just remember, focus on the eye when shooting portrait and soften the face by adjusting the picture control.

@dan: I'm not sure if you're a Canonite or a Nikonian, but this link might help: Canon Lenses - Canon EF Camera Lens Information

Just click Canon Portrait Lens Recommendations.

ask pod ko ok raba ang 35mm 1.8 para portrait?

@dice14: For full body and quarter length ok. For head and shoulder, you're probably better off with an 85mm (in my experience a 50mm is already too close). For outdoors, 100-200mm would be great. This is the reason why most advanced amateurs and pros prefer the 70-200 2.8s. They're not as fast as prime medium telephotos but they prefer the flexibility of constant aperture zooms.

Update: I'm a crop user by the way. 1.6 but since you mentioned the 35 1.8, then you're a Nikonian (1.5 crop, right?)

35mm is more commonly used for full body portraits. pwede sad na duol ka sa subject pero it wud be very uneasy for the subject. if wedding imo apilan then ud better not use a prime lens. unless you have another back up cam ur better off using the 70-200 f/2.8 or 80-200 f/2.8 (cheaper but no VR). pero if gusto jud a mu use ug prime lens then these are what i wud recommend:

tamron 90 f/2.8 - they call this lens the portrait macro. around 28K
nikon 60 f/2.8 - nindot ni cya for portrait sad. around 32k
nikon 105 f/2.8 - can be used for portraiture and macro (better than tamron but almost twice as expensive). around 45k
