For beginners? Is this going to be your first camera?
Then ask youself:
1. Are you willing to carry around a bulky and heavy dslr?
2. Or would you prefer a compact and light camera that fits in your bag or pocket?
Don't rush in to dSLR cameras. These are heavy, bulky and fragile equipment that makes crappy photos in the hands of inexperienced users. A Canon S90 set to AUTO (full idiot mode of the camera) can easily make good quality snapshots without the need to load it to photoshop and correcting it.
I'm glad you guys aren't getting tired of these threads. That said, I've to agree with dbgg. The first question you need to ask yourself is, "Why do I want a camera?" I bought a Canon point and shoot to shoot my daughter during her school's events. I always used Auto but sadly a friend taught me how to use AV and Manual in April 2008 and I got hooked on serious photography. I used the point and shoot until December 2008. I then bought a Canon 450D (its contender was the Nikon D80) for the simple reason that Canon has a service center here. We would soon see yet another "Which is better Canon or Nikon?" or "Which model is better" or yadda yadda but let me share this snippet from the Introduction of the book, The Art of Photography (published in 1981 by Time-Life books):
"The use of a camera does not disqualify a photographer from being taken seriously as an artist, any more than the use of a typewriter disqualifies a poet, playwright, or novelist. Neither does the camera or typewriter, however expensive, make the artist."
Marquis de Sade continued to write, using wine, blood and even his own feces after his quill was taken away.
Define your need and budget first, then do your own research as to what camera best fits them. If you do get a DSLR, don't get the ones with kit lenses. I made that mistake. You'll eventually sell it as I did mine. Whether you choose Canon or Nikon, get the 50mm 1.8 first. It's not a zoom lens but you'll be amazed at the photos you'd take even on Auto
Good luck.
