The Sinulog Grand Parade apparently wasn’t insulated from the long-running feud between Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.
He ignored the governor’s dance with the Tabuelan Ani-anihan festival contingent.
He also fumed after spotting her brother Capitol consultant Byron Garcia trying to enter the VIP section inside the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).
He told usherettes to instruct the staff to escort Garcia out of the VIP section.
“What kind of question is that? He does not have a VIP pass so why should he be here?” Osmeña told CEBU DAILY NEWS.
Otherwise, the show went on as the Cebu City contingent of 80 dancers including children from the city task force on street children opened the grand parade.
They were followed by the Cebu City Hall float which featured the mayor's pet project, the South Road Properties (SRP).
The float displayed a replica of the SRP's welcome rotunda and a huge Sto. Niño image found near the Sugbu building of the SRP.
The float had imprints “owned by the people of Cebu.”
Two contingents from Tribu Akrho and Sambag 1 danced on stage followed by the ani-anihan festival contingent of Tabuelan town led by Governor Garcia who wore a gown by Cebuano designer Cary Santiago.
The governor joined the elementary and high school students of Tabuelan town along with Capitol department heads in their presentation choreographed by Maximar Costudio.
Custodio was choreographer of the Mabolo Elementary School which won the Sinulog Sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan elementary division competition.
The governor didn't make a repeat performance before the Cebu City government contingent led by first lady Margot Osmeña did their Sinulog dance finale.
Sources said Mayor Osmeña instructed Sinulog organizers to change the Sinulog program and allow Garcia to dance only once at the grandstand stage.
Sinulog Foundation Inc. executive director Ricky Ballesteros said the changes were done to shorten the program.
He said even the Cebu City contingent performed only in the morning.
Asked why the Capitol contingent was relegated to the fourth performers, Ballesteros said “It need not be asked. It’s a given.”
“My not dancing again in the evening was upon prior notice from the organizers,” was Garcia's reply when asked by CDN on her no-show.
Garcia said Sinulog organizers told her office about the changes while she was in China two weeks ago.
“Well, at least I was able to make my offering to the Sto. Nino this morning,” Garcia said.
She said she intends to continue dancing the Sinulog next year if allowed to because “it is for the Sto. Niño.”
Mayor Osmeña didn't watch the governor's presentation at the VIP area while his wife Margot left her seat before the presentation was over.
He said Garcia merely wanted to promote herself and added that she wouldn’t dance the Sinulog if she wasn’t the lead dancer in the contingent.
Nagiel Bañacia, city protocol and public information officer, said he didn't know how Byron and two celebrities entered the VIP area without passes.
Byron immediately left the grandstand, while Osmeña followed him until he reached the rubberized track.
The mayor then talked to Bañacia, asking how the governor's brother managed to reach the VIP section.
