yup thats true pops...
for example:
light from softbox produce soft pleasing light than the light from snoot or grid wich is hardlight and directional...
the larger the light source the softer the light it creates...
also consider the light to subject distance.
closer you light source the softer the light.(thanks fafadex for the corrections)

sorry.. my confusion is...
what is big and what is small light?
newbie here, akong sabot ani bai kay for example off camera flash, kung bare flash then its small light source kay gamay man ang flash head but you noticed that harder ang light but if you use shoot thru umbrella it will now become a big lightsource nga light gikan sa umbrella but since diffused na ang light nga mo pass sa umbrella it will now a become a softer light. Di ba naa man kay lightsphere? pareha ra sad na kung wala'y attached nga lightsphere kay hardlight gyud ang ma igo sa model but if with lightsphere kay medyo softer light na. The lightsphere will act as a bigger light source.
big lights are
umbrellas, large softbox, reflectors(strobes) floodlights(bounce or not)
if you connect a umbrella on a speedlight(wich is a small light source) the light that the umbrella produces will be soft...
or if you bounce your speed light to a wall or reflector it will also produce soft light, your light source will be the wall or the reflector.
as for small light... most of it are directional lights and concentrated on a small portion on your subject...
ex... when you attached a coned snoot on your strobe your light source will be concentrated on one direction...
@witikoy: i think the lightsphere acts/behaves more like a bare lightbulb rather than softening light. what it does is scatter light all around, bouncing light to walls and ceilings at the same time illuminating the subject in which produces a well lit environment... same thing goes for the stofen type diffusers
bigger or smaller refers to the size of your light source, a 60 inch umbrella produces softer light compared to a 43 inch umbrella![]()
pops...
the larger your light source the the softer it is... tendency nyan pops... the large light will wrap around your subject and cast soft shadows and edge...
pero pops as what I say early on my post consider the light to subject distance.
