Strong quake shakes Tonga

(CNN) -- A strong earthquake Friday rattled Tonga -- and more than a few nerves.

The 6.3-magnitude quake was latest in a series quakes that have rattled the region this week, spawning tsunamis and leaving several hundred dead.

The epicenter was at sea about 55 miles (85 km) southeast of Hihifo, Tonga, at a depth of about 6 miles (10 km).

The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

On Tuesday, a magnitude 8.0 quake-triggered tsunami killed at least 111 people in the Samoan islands and Tonga.

The towering waves swept across a wide swath of the Pacific Ocean, killing dozens and flattening or submerging villages.



The dead included 22 in American Samoa, 82 in Samoa and seven in Tonga.

At least 10 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or above have shaken the region since Thursday afternoon.
