Engine
I've never been a fan of any telenovelas. At P250.00 for a set of 7 dvds, this one's a knock off. What you'll get for watching "Engine" is a straight 12 sleepless hours. The box cover is made to appeal as if this Japanese TV series were about zooming F3000s that when captured in motion would create blurring effects on your tv screens, or about panning ear-deafening car engines, or about comparing which among the race-girls have longer legs. And so I bought the box with the thought that I would be watching a movie full of brooms and bangs and zooms. It wasn't.
Meet Jiro (Takuyi Kimora), a happy go lucky individual whose passion revolves around the racing circuit. After being dumped as a second driver in his team in Europe, Jiro returns home in Japan where he is surprised to learn that his house has been turned into an orphanage. The first few laps of the series clearly establishes Jiro's hate towards the children which would eventually build up a contrasting element and tension on his character and in the whole telenovelas. Careless, happy go lucky, and insensitive towards others feelings and especially towards the perilous condition of the orphan's shelter due to financial instability, Jiro must get his hands back on grip the steering wheel of one of the world's killer vehicles. This is the only way he could prove to his father, who later is revealed as only his foster parent, that he is also a part of the babysitters, staff, teachers, parents in the house. At least he is their driver while waiting for an opportunity to get back on the F3000's seat and compete against the one who took his place as the Formula Nippon champ when he went to Europe.
It turns out that, among his colleagues, he is the one who is most effective in solving the individual kid's problems and without him trying to do so. When it reaches to the point that they could no longer afford to finance for the house's sustenance, the children are transferred separately to another orphanage. If you feel like crying, then this 'lap'might be your climax. But not yet, because Jiro's heart has to decide yet whom to choose. Is it Tomomi (Koyoki, The Last Samurai) or his passion to race? As told by Jiro's previous girlfriend to Tomomi, "Be careful with Jiro as his heart is more inclined to racing than loving someone." This is really a wholesome Japanese TV series; a family gatherer.
You may not expect the racing scenes to be as fantastic as those found on the Star Sports F1 Championship series. But at least, the cinematographic techniques these filmmakers introduce are far more improved compared to any local telenovelas. The dialoque is only available either in Japanese and Chinese, so you might as well be dependent on the subtitles which is beautifully transcribed at the first half of the movie, but really really bad at the second half. Although the Chinese is in 5.1 audio set-up, I preferred using the Japanese one in stereo mode. But it's also good to switch back and forth from 2.0 for the dialogue and, to 5.1 for the racing scenes.
