PLDT myDSL rolls out "WatchPad" service | The Freeman >> The Freeman Sections >> Cebu Business
PLDT myDSL subscribers will now enjoy watching real-time cable TV channels on their computers through PLDT’s new service dubbed as the “WatchPad.”
This will allow the growing 500 thousand PLDT myDSL subscribers to watch cable television channels over the Internet portal—free of charge, “as long as they will register [online] to the service.”
PLDT myDSL senior manager for product development Jet Herna said that PLDT is now offering 15 channels available to the service, this include; MTV, Cartoon Network, PBO, CNN, CNBC, and soon the local TV network GMA.
Before the end of the year, the company is planning to make at least 25 channels available through the Internet.
WatchPad, is on Beta format and its full service is available for free to all PLDT myDSL subscribers. At present, there are already over 3,000 subscribers who are enjoying this latest multimedia application aimed at merging Web television with several other interactive services.
The best feature of the new service is the buffer-time free video streaming which does not require a lot of memory space from personal computers or desktops, unlike in conventional video-sharing sites.
Existing subscribers will only have to register online to gain access to the new PLDT application and watch the initial eight channels available for free. More channels and applications will soon come into the program as testing and enhancements continue.
Developed by a Malaysian firm, the browser-based application combines television channels, a move-on-demand service, a chat room and other Web-based operations.
“The young people nowadays spend more time on the Internet,” Dan Ibarra head of PLDT’s retail business group said.
He said PLDT will soon introduce premium services like new cable channels and movies-on-demand for a fee together with other enhancements on the application.
Herna said the program is still for free and MyDSL subscribers only have to register online to avail of the features.
“Customers right now want to do so many things at the same time,” she said adding that the application opens new horizons either to keep existing customers or to entice new subscribers.
With this new application and service offered through the Internet, PLDT myDSL officials assured that this service will not threaten the cable industry business in the Philippines, as this will cater to the different market segment.
Now, only being offered through the company’s myDSL product, Herna said in the next months, PLDT will be offering this to other PLDT internet products, such as WeRoam, and SmartBro.
Developed only in two-months time, WAtchPad’s basic programming like the access to television and cable channels will be offered for free, however, for those premium programs like in-demand movies and others will be extra charges.
