sorry but i'm not a fan of dietel... the book is not straightforward and sometimes may confuse the reader although some parts are easy to understand. if you want a book for beginner then i suggest sams teach yourself java. Before you learn Java GUI, try to learn the basic so you will not have a hard time using netbeans or any Java IDEs.
