not yet totally clear in the story BUT i think na it was because during his training with urahara the first time since he almost became hollow thats where it happened and boom he became vizard. Then again thats my theory

ako theory is it happened when rukia's powers were transfered to ichigo..ktoh first time na.shinigami si ichigo..coz naa byah ni rukia ang hogyoku ato..so basin natransfer..dont know..hihihi

its possible, its a combination of both...it could be a result sa inherent na power ni rukia sa hougokyu then, pag training nila ni urahara ni gawas ang iyang hollow form...

..wala pa man tong hogyoku ni rukia atong tyma na iyang gi transfer iyang spiritual force ngadto kay ichigo..it was on the latter part were urahara helping rukia on gaining her powers back..

..sa training gyud to under ni urahara..kahibaw biya si urahara sa process of holliwification..he even called the training as holliwification...

..after na gale gi transfer ni rukia ang iyang spiritual force kay ichigo..like, nahurot halos lahat iyang spiritual force kay nasuyop ni ichigo..then urhara came..iya gi tagaan ug gigai si rukia..i think adto na niya gi implant ang hogyoku kay rukia..

..if you could remember rukia was bothered by her gigai..and urahara even asked for apologies to rukia kay nadamay siya sa situation..

..it was due to hollowification that ichigo became a vaizard..urahara even once said (after the byakuya incident, locking ichigo's ability to become a shinigami) that ichigo can't be a shinigami unless he goes through holliwification..kato naa siya sa pit..and the chain was cut off..remember now?!..
