Cesafi selection to face Blue Eagles

THE top three teams in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Partners Cup held last March—the Southwestern University (SWU), University of Cebu (UC) and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R)—will unite to represent the Cesafi in the Friendship Cup on June 7 to 11 at the Cebu Coliseum.

The team will be facing the 2008 champion of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, who will be fresh from their summer training in the US.

Aside from these two teams, also competing are the Cebu Landmasters and the Smart Pampanga Buddies of Liga Pilipinas.

Leading the Cesafi selection are SWU’s Alfred Belande, Ardd Evan Django, Eleazar Armecin, Ritchie Jalandoni and Rene Pacquiao.

    UV players

The picks from UC are 6’9" center June Mar Fajardo, three-point master Moncrief Rogado, Jansen Abella, Edward Pao and Kevin Quilantang.

The players from USJ-R are Kurt Amores, Jerome Villaver, Edwin Bibera, Marvin Duran and Edmar Pateno.

Ateneo, on the other hand, will be led by UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Rookie of the Year Ryan Buenafe, Kirk Long, Jai Reyes, Nonoy Baclao, Bacon Austria, Eric Salamat, Juami Tiongson, Zags Gonzaga, Nico Salva, Vince Burke, Mike Baldos, Justin Chua, Chris De Chavez, Frank Golla and Cebuano Christopher Sumalinog.

Although players from the eight-time champion University of the Visayas (UV) are not included in the Cesafi lineup, the Cebu Landmasters lineup is filled with former Green Lancers.

The Cebu Landmasters will be coached by Jun Tan.

Rino Berami, Ariel Mepana, Mark Abaon and Jayford Rodriguez lead the Landmasters with Alex Cainglet and former USJ-R player Luther Justiniani.

The teams will play a single round-robin with the top two squads advancing to the championship round, while the bottom two will fight for third place.
