HELP: Vista hangs up

my Vista laptop hangs up for no reason.. most of the time after leaving it idle for a few minutes, sometimes while just surfing the net. This began only last night.

When it starts to happen, I can still move some windows, interact with the desktop, but I can't close/open programs or do anything other than right-click on the desktop and move some gadgets on the sidebar. Then eventually, I can't do anything at all, I have to hard reset it. Then it happens again soon after.

What's wrong?

btw, a few days ago while booting up, a popup showed displaying "This driver has not been started" or something.. Nothing more, no info, etc. I just pressed "OK" and everything went fine. I figured it was nothing. Hasn't popped up ever since. I checked my drivers through Device Manager, and everything seems fine.

Check your system files for corruption, type sfc /scannow in the command prompt

I tried it twice, both hanged up at "Verifying 38%".. Not sure if it is just a coincidence.
Gonna try a reformat..
