Latin was the official language of the Catholic church and was phased out during the Vatican II. Reason? so that the lay people can participate together with the priest unlike before the priest says mass in front of the altar and says latin with himself and the sacristan. Now, the priest says mass in the vernacular language so that the people will understand!
