As reported only 65 percent of Filipinos can understand the English language compared to 77 percent six years ago, results of the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey revealed Tuesday.
The survey utilized 1,200 respondents nationwide and was conducted from March 8 to March 14 of this year. It was commissioned under the Promoting English Proficiency Project of the American Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the Makati Business Club.
The SWS survey recorded a drop in the number of Filipinos who can read, write, speak and think in English.
The survey indicated that only 68 percent of the respondents can read English, lower than the 76 percent recorded in the year 2000. It said 48 percent of the respondents said they can write in the English language, down from 61 percent six years ago.
The number of Filipinos who can speak English also went down to 32 percent compared to 54 percent in the last survey.
The number of Filipinos who can think in the English language also dropped to 27 percent from 44 percent in 2000.
The survey showed that Filipinos who cannot totally understand English doubled from 7 percent in 2000 to 14 percent this year.
The survey results were released Tuesday by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, which is presently conducting an English proficiency seminar for Filipinos.
