Default Russia: More than 20 dead in nuclear sub accident

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- An accident aboard a nuclear-powered Russian navy submarine doing a test run in the Pacific Ocean on Saturday killed more than 20 people, the navy said.

The nuclear reactor aboard the submarine was operating normally and radiation levels were normal, navy spokesman Capt. Igor Dygalo said on Sunday.

The accident occurred when a fire-extinguishing system went into operation in error aboard the submarine, Dygalo said. He said the dead included sailors and shipbuilders.

The submarine was heading back to shore on its own power, and 21 people injured in the accident were evacuated to a ship that was escorting the sub. There were 208 people aboard the vessel.

The state-run RIA-Novosti news agency cited an unnamed official in Russia's Pacific Fleet as saying the accident occurred toward the bow of the submarine and that there was no threat to the nuclear reactor, closer to the center.

Dygalo would not name the submarine or say exactly where the accident took place.

RIA-Novosti cited an unnamed official at the Amur Shipbuilding Factory as saying the sub was built there, is called the Nerpa and was on a test run in the Sea of Japan when the accident occurred.

The official said the sub was heading for a base in the Primorye region, which includes the port city of Vladivostok.

According to RIA-Novosti, testing on the submarine began last month and it submerged for the first time last week.

Russia's navy has been plagued by deadly accidents, including the explosions that sank the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk in 2000, killing all 118 seamen aboard.

Saturday's accident came as the Kremlin seeks to restore Russia's naval reputation. A naval squadron is headed to Venezuela for joint exercises this month in a show of force near U.S. waters.

another sub accident and of all places in the pacific region pa jud.

ang hugong2x atong kursk kay they were testing theyre supercavitation technology in torpedoes, SHKVAl, or what nato classifies as Squall, with the chinese. a nato sub went too close in listening and an accident happened. of course, nobody wants to present a detailed account top secret bya ang technology gi testingan.

Imagine what the russian and chinese could do with a torpedo that could travel 200 knots.

Maybe, basig ni backfire and torpedo, haha..

SHKVAI is not a threat to the US Naval Vessels or to other NATO ships, because despite the novelty of the supercavitation system, the Shkval has significant shortcomings. It has a very short range, compared to standard torpedoes and unguided variants must travel in a straight line, making effective targeting very difficult. Secondly, because sound travels much faster under water, it is thought that the Shkval would be highly detectable upon launch. Later versions with guidance and homing systems that require the torpedo to slow down to be able to operate are vulnerable to the same countermeasures as standard torpedoes, thus eliminating the weapon's one advantage. According to some reports, Russia is experimenting with a wire-guidance system for the weapon, but this is a project fraught with difficulties.

And another problem kay kung ma detect ba sa Russian or China and mga subs sa US..

The SHKVAL has indeed many shortcomings, but they are afterall just starting to tinker with supercavitation technology. It is obviously detectable because of the very strong noise that it emits, but once TMA has plotted its target, its almost impossible to maneuver from it. noisy, but its fast. You know its coming but theres not enough time to maneuver. the earlier variant is unguided fired snapshot, but ive heard dunno how true, but it must be, because the russians arent that stupid that they are developing a guided variant as youve said earlier - but that again has its problems. Suffice to say, the squall is important in blitz attack, the very moment a submarine is detected it would be impossible for it to evade when fired.

The Akula is said to be the most silent submarine in the world arguably more silent than the Los Angeles class, but with the commissioning of the Seawolf class, the akula fails in comparison. problema lang, the seawolf class is so expensive, the Oversight committee sa congress - i think, decided to put a halt to the production, thus around only 3, i think, seawolf class roams the oceans in this planet with the USS Seawolf as its first sub.

I dunno, kung ni backfire ba jud ang torpedo, hungong2x nga ang nato sub came in too close in listening during the testing of the weapons nga it inadvertedly hit the Kursk. Chinese Military personnel who were observing the tests, perhaps because gibaligya ni or this is a joint project is said to have been one of those who sunk with kursk.

    but then again, who knows?

Russia hasn't been able to compete with the US for decades. Trying just brought it's collapse.
