it would be impolite it you say it directly... although it would be better if you ask him/her to listen to you and don't act harsh after whatever you say.

It is always not an easy task to tell a person that you do not love him/her anymore. If it is just bf-gf...then the best way is to just cut fast and clean. If it is a marriage...you should tell the spouse the problem and then try to find solution like counseling.
