Whenver I try to install a software with the extension "*.MSI", the problem with windows not being able to access the windows installer service always arises. how do you fix this?? I tried the forums online sa windows vista, but the SFC or System File Check still does not work.

Start Menu -> Start Services -> type in "services.msc". Start the "Windows Installer" service.

in addition to vern's reply: set it to run "manual" if its disabled.

I followed the instructions to the letter. when I checked the services, it was already on manual and started. So i stopped it, then started it>restarted my pc> and lo and behold, same problem comes up. The Program in question is the iTunes 8.0 x64 isntaller. I know there have been a lot of problems with this with vista users. I have not tried installing other wares with MSI installers though.

Itunes is horrid on Windows. I blogged about it here ...

As for your question, I find that most problems with Itunes installs are fixed by running msconfig -> selective startup -> uncheck "load startup items". Restart your computer, make sure the install service is on, and start the Itunes install.

I think i've read somewhere a few days ago about apple releasing a patch for itunes which causes BSOD on vista users. you might also want to check that out before you install it.

What I usually do re that original error is reinstall windows installer. you can download the installer from microsoft.

Not a patch, they simply removed the original 8.0 download, rolled back the USB driver, and put it up as 8.0. All the 8.0 downloads now are based off the old USB driver.
