SEO or search engine optimization is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of visitors to a website through top rankings on search engines for page (webpage) relevant keywords.

So if you had a bicycle store that sells bicycle parts, an SEO Professional will work to make sure that when someone goes to Google and searches for bicycle parts, your website gets found on the first page, preferably the first 5 results.. in the specific country where your customers are found.

However if you have a service or product or website topic whose customer based is not limited to geography or a specific area, for instance if you were selling software, then you would try to rank for all countries, but particular focus is done in the country with the highest number of keyword searches that pertain to the software since a higher search volume can be indicative of a potential market.

Example.. the keyword, website tracking... if you had a website that you want to get search engine traffic for the keyword website tracking, the top 5 countries with the highest search volume for that keyword are India, Singapore, US, Australia, Canada then you focus on ranking high for searches by people from those countries. Even if you were number 1 for that keyword in a country with no one searching for that keyword you will not increase the quantity of visitors.

Also, quality of visitors pertains to the type of visitors who are more predisposed to perform a conversion on your site for instance, buy a product you are promoting or sign up for your mailing list. This is done by further segmentation of the market into smaller niches based on the specific keywords customers.

For example... if I were selling a product, to make some serious money I want my website to be found on the first page of Google when people search for that specific product. Here is a specific example... if someone was looking for a product called affiliate prophet, which is a type of software used by online marketers to track their ads, the number 1 site that comes up is my website.

Furthermore... the pages ranked on number 2, 4, 6 and 8 are also my sites. So that means, I have a greater chance of getting visitors that search for that keyword because I own 5 out of 10 of the sites ranking on the first page of Google. When these visitors buy the product and become my customers, I make money from the sale.
