Default Should Government Scrap the VAT on OIL and ELECTRICITY?

Most headlines now a days mainly cover either , the continuing high prices of oil, electricty (the Meralco brouhaha) or food prices particularly rice. The average and the not so average Filipino is clamoring for a relief from his difficulties through higher wages. Government has dragged its feet in coming out with something and alot of people do not believe this is the answer because this will only fuel inflation all the more.

But if its relief that we want wouldn't a scrapping of the VAT on fuel and electricity ease the pain? What do you think?

i think no. it only worsens our situation. we got evat because of our inefficiency to collect tax. nya kung kwa on ni, musamot intawn kabati ang serbisyo sa atong hinigugmang gobyerno. worse is mablacklist ta sa atong creditors, like imf, jcia, adb.

To a certain extent I do agree that srapping the VAT might lead our government to miss its targets and affect our overall credit standing. But I also believe that the projected collections from VAT may have already exceeded the initial targets because oil prices at these levels could not have been projected at the time when they imposed the VAT. Bottom line what I am trying to say is that to the extent that VAT projected collections are reached the VAT % on fuel and electricity should be correspondingly decreased. If done this way dili maa pektuhan ang ilang revenue projections and they can continue to pay the country's debts and deliver services.

What aggravates the situation I guess is the more than expected subsidies brought about by the rising rice prices and subsidies to GOCCs like NPC and NFA.

    hyperwage theory is the key.
    dako sweldo=dako tax
mo balik ra gihapon ang kwarta sa goberno (may lang dili kurakuton)

For oil and electricity, yes. For food, angay sad kuhaun ang evat kay double taxation naman. We are paying income tax na and chargan pa ta ug evat sa mga palitunun natu especially food.
