MySQL and Postgresql are the most popular free ones.
Actually they are they same in VB's point of view if you use an ODBC connector.

Indeed there are they same, you may use the ADO using ODBC connection, try to search in google for this, it has a lot of samples for this. If I may suggest, shift directly to VB.Net it has a good feature in open-database connectivity. Try also to search on this site: www.codeproject.com

I’m assuming that you ship this system to a company. But if you are doing it for educational purposes just don’t read my comments below. Just listen to your heart and where your skills are strong. Example: If you’re a vb6 guru then use it. If you’re good in mySQL then use it.

This is my comments if you’re going to ship it to a company.
Choosing a database is remarkably simple. Verify the attributes of your design and the users expectation. All databases have their own limitations unless you decide for Oracle database but even Oracle database has its own minimal limitation. I advocate on latest PL and latest databases but I don’t risk the stakeholders ROI. Our job is not only to automate their manual routine but also to make them profitable in using our finished product.

if you already develop systems using vb6 before then by all means use vb6 as your front end and MSSQL as your backend...you utiliize views, stored procedures and the likes....but if your just starting to develop a single tier or simple app...ms access and vb would do the job....
