    Default Open source programmers

I wonder how people in the open source community make money. Can anyone share their ideas?

    1) Most open source programmers DO HAVE main jobs,
kanang ilang gipangBuhat kay out of HOBBY and necessity (ex tools).

    2) Open source softwares na daghan users get money thru contributions from those companies
na mogamit sa ilang software specially para i mentainance or upgradeor aditional support.
Example is when an open source projects was halted kay wlay nay monetary fund then a certain
company still wants to use the software but find out na wla naman d ay na maintenance, then mo donate cla
    ug money.

    3) They are run by foundations and group of people who have enough monetary funds (or do have a Main JOB) and ofcourse foundations accepts donations.

In summary, you cant earn enough steady money doing open source projects, all you get is "Thank you" ,a happy users, and maybe fame on the internet. But if you make a breakthrough then basin naay mag fund na company sa imng gbuhat mosikat jd kaayu ka sa Geek community.

I cant recall a certain individual na ni Datu doing sa open source projects correct me if im wrong.

Just consider MySQL being acquired by Sun Microsystems for over 'a billion' dollars.

    • By finding a sponsor. The company that I'm working on sponsored me (i.e., by giving me monthly salary, free access to high-end hardware, infrastructure, etc) to implement a couple of features for an open source software.
    • By taking on bounty projects. The last project that I worked on was for a company that wanted to have a LiveCD BSD Installer for an open source software. The company didn't have qualms about releasing the source code back to the community with a BSD license. Sayang, the implementation was too project-specific, so releasing it back was not very practical. There's always next time anyway.
    • By providing services that use open source software. If you're a web developer, you can provide PHP Web apps that run on Apache, lighttpd, nginx, MySQL, PostgreSQL, <insert favorite software here> instead of ASP or ColdFusion on Microsoft IIS. If you're a sysad, you can do your job administering these software. If you're a software dev, you can use the venerable gcc.
    • You can provide support ala Redhat Linux too.
