Default Should PhilippineZoos be closed and animals released back into the Philippine forest

I really dont know where to post this as there isnt an environmental section here, though i'm very much interested at the thoughts of our fellow istoryans about this topic.

A lot of controversy had been going on about the closure of zoos around the Philippines as advocated by PETA, now the question is whether Should we close our zoos and release animals back to the wild?

I do not think we (the Philippines or our government) can even maintain a zoo (they cannot even tame animals in the senate house the least!)

Let's say our government set up the complete animals in a zoo. After a year or two (right after somebody in the government has made money for him/herself of putting up the "zoo program"), all cages will house nothing but monkeys. Have you noticed that all our ill-managed zoos in the philippines only have (or the majority) are monkeys? Monkeys are probably one of the most adaptable animals, the rest will die of malnutrition and

Even so, check out the monkeys, how skinny and aggressive they are as they are not properly being taken cared of.

I would suggest a private organization maintain the zoo. Then we can probably give more justice to our animals.

Nice ones mga bro. Who is in favor of PETA then? those who would fight for the freedom of animals in Zoos?

dili angay kay wa na na anad ang mga animals nga sila ang mangita sa ila fuds... mamatay ra na sila or patyon ra sa uban tao...

that is true...these animals are so used to getting fed that they will either steal and get killed because they are getting to be a menace...or they will be killed for food.

my opinion is ....release the animals to avilon (?) zoo who seems to be the most successful zoo to date.

No.....as long as the owner of the zoo can give proper care to the animals...zoo are very important especially to the young ones who need to explore our world...through zoo they are able to see many animals personally and will learn to take care them in the right time...
for me,,putting animals in the zoo is not putting them in prison but to give them a shelter in order to survive because even if we're many who loves to care them...their are also people who don't value and hunt them...

definitely no..if nana sila sa wild,,ang lion, unsaon nlng ..he.he..iuli sa africa,,,dpat dili,,they are not safe in the wild...better sa zoo, ky ma breed pa ang ang endangered animals..

para kita pug ng mga bata oist...uban mananap sa zoo wa sa pinas..i think some zoo's are owned by private entity......or LGU's....

I am personally against the release of these animals back into the wild but for the sake of those who are not represented in this discussion e.g. PETA and other animal welfare activists, let me share to you some of their points.

Animals are meant to be free, Eagles are meant to soar, lions to bound but once we keep them inside cages we restrict their freedom and activities within the four corners of their cage. Zoos busy themselves with simulating the exact environment of animals whem animals can be released back into the wild where simulation is not anymore necessar. efforts on zoos would be better carried on in the protection of our natural reserves. If private individuals can finance the making of a zoo then why cant they help the govt instead in protecting the natural reserves and forest of the Philippines, in this way there will be no necessity as to bring wild animals into captive breeding.

The more we rely on captive breeding, the more we become dependent on this technique the lesser chances of us getting concious on the protection of our forests, we would then likely think of the lesser importance of the forest since we had become successful at breeding animals out of the forest. In this mentality, we would soon lose our natural heritage. What makes this problem worse is the procrastinating habit of the Filipinos (i am one of you though, hehehe) "bahala na".

Besides, animals kept in captivity are very unlikely to adapt back into the wild. Take for example the Phil. eagle "kabayan". It perched on a high voltage wire as it was not afraid to go near human habitation where danger lurked almost everywhere. If it was not electricuted it would still have died under the hands of trigger happy hunters who find devilish joy in killing birds (also known as sport in their terms). All i'm trying to point here is that animals bred in captivity, or domesticated can would find it quite difficult to adapt back to the wild if highly exposed to humans. WE may be able to save them but they wont be as real and as amazing the wild ones.

In the Philippines, too little effort is done by too few people who can only do so much......just my thoughts.

It is nice to see those animals in the zoo be released in the wild...
the problem is, are we prepared for that
Area for the wild, do we still have that here?
Do we have enough information/education to those living near the
    area?
    Who will monitor? maintain? Funds?
If the said PETA is going for it... then I am sure they have all these
    preparations.
If they dont,,, you better visit the zoos now and have the last look
    of those animals.

This is very risky... personally I am not inclined for this...
If they would like to help... improve the zoos and our forests
and stop illegal hunters and wildlife traders.
