How do the thousands of pixels on a Charged Coupled Device convert light into electrons? Likewise, how are these electrons measured afterwards but prior to being digital value?

I'm dying with curiousity as to how this happens. If anyone could explain (perhaps someone with knowledge in electronic and electrical engineering), I'll appreciate and hopefully - in lay man's terms as well.
