Farmers set on fire 300 hectares of Luisita - The Philippine Star » News » Headlines

Farmers set on fire 300 hectares of Luisita
By Ric Sapnu (The Philippine Star) Updated December 21, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (10)

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga, Philippines – Local farmers allegedly set fire to a portion of the sugarcane field at Hacienda Luisita that is owned by the family of President Aquino in Barangay Balete, Tarlac City where P1-million worth of crops were destroyed last Friday morning.
Police are investigating the alleged involvement of Barangay Balete councilmen Pual Mallari and Hilario Hipolito, Leonila Halili, Dominador Salian, all of Barangay Balete and Felix Nacpil of Barangay Mabilog, Concepcion, Tarlac. The suspects reportedly led at least 30 farmers that started the blaze.
Investigators said 300 hectares of surgarcane were burned out of the 6,000-hectare plantation owned by Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI), which is owned by the Aquinos and Cojuangcos.
Hacienda Luisita Independent Planters Association, Azucal Inc. and other farmers from Sugarcane Farming Agricultural Corp. are currently renting the sugar plantation from HLI.
The police is also investigating the participation of some members of local farmers’ associations.
The Tarlac police and HLI fire trucks responded to the fire that started at 10:30 a.m. and firefighters were able to put out the blaze after five hours.
Felix Nacpil Jr., chairman of the Alyansang Magbubukid ng Asyenda Luisita (Ambala), said the group had celebrated the ruling of the Supreme Court (SC) that nullified last month the stock distribution plan and ordered the distribution of land to the farmers.
Nacpil said the Hacienda Luisita farmers were jubilant after the SC ordered HLI to distribute the more than 6,000 hectares of land to some 5,000 peasant farmers of the plantation.

He called on the Cojuangco family to distribute the land to the legitimate beneficiaries as soon as possible.
“We are very hopeful that they (HLI owners) would respect the SC’s decision,” Nacpil said.
Meanwhile, HLI asked the SC yesterday to reconsider the court’s ruling issued last Nov. 22 that fixed the payment for the 4,915.75-hectare plantation on the valuation of the land in 1989, when the Presidential Agrarian Reform Council (PARC) approved its stock distribution plan.
In a 45-page motion to clarify and reconsider, the HLI prayed that the reckoning period for the fixing of the just compensation on the agricultural land should be at the issuance of the Notice of Coverage on Jan. 2, 2006.
In the alternative, the reckoning period should be left to the Land Bank and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to determine as an integral part in fixing the just compensation, HLI said.
The HLI also prayed that legal interest should be paid on the just compensation from the time of the reckoning period up to the time of actual payment.
They also asked the Court that just compensation should be paid to the landowner, Tadeco, for the homelots distributed to the farmers. With Sandy Araneta

So PhilStar filed the story about the HL management's filing for a reconsideration too, but notice how differently it was presented (deep within the body of the article). Note too that as of now, no other media outlet filed any news report regarding the burning of 300 hectares (that would have been newsworthy!)

So who says it was not in the personal interest of Noynoy Aquino and his clan to impeach Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, and threaten the other claimed “Arroyo justices” with impeachment, especially in the light of the Cojuangco-Aquinos of Hacienda Luisita going to the high court pushing the recall of the SC ruling on the hacienda unfavorable to the hacienda owners, even having the SC declare the Stock Distribution Option (SDO) valid, along with a call for higher just compensation for the clan?

It wasn’t the temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the high court against the Leila de Lima’s hold departure order and stoppage of Gloria Arroyo’s departure that got Noynoy frothing in the mouth, but the SC decision on Luisita. It is the bigger stake of keeping Luisita in the hands of the Cojuangco-Aquinos that drove Noynoy to get the SC to toe his line. Noynoy merely used the TRO as an excuse and had Corona impeached by the House to cow all the other justices into submission.

And abusing his powers and demonizing the high court for his, and his family’s personal interest and not the interest of the people is what he has the nerve to call the daang matuwid?

Using the same argument for “just compensation” of Noy appointee and friendly SC Justice Lourdes Sereno, hacienda lawyers want the determination of the valuation of the hacienda moved to a later date, 2006, from the original SC decision which said that the just compensation shall be based on the value of the property in 1989 when the SDO was approved and not for the SC to give the valuation, but for LandBank and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to determine the just compensation. But of course, the DAR and the LandBank are under the control of Noynoy.

More: They also want “legal interest paid on the just compensation from the time of the reckoning, which to them is 2006, up to the time of actual payment” with just compensation paid to Tarlac Development Corp. (Tadeco) for the homelots it had distributed to farm workers.

The Cojuangco-Aquinos really want it all. The hacienda owners want “the original 6,296 FWBs (farm worker beneficiaries) to be given the individual option to choose whether they still want to remain or not as stockholders of HLI.”

Alternatively for the FWBs, the report went, they said the farmers should “be allowed to sell the lands awarded to them upon full payment of the amortizations to the government through the Land Bank of the Philippines,” apart from their call for the proceeds from the sales or transfers of the 500 hectares and of the 80.5 hectares for the SCTex (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway) road network be considered as part of the assets of HLI.

The hacienda owners are certainly making damn sure that the farmers will not get the land at all as the cost of paying off the clan would be unaffordable for the farmer-beneficiaries.

See the connection between Noy’s threatening stance against the justices and the fight to keep the hacienda with the Cojuangco-Aquinos and getting paid handsomely by the Noynoy government — which means the Filipino taxpayers shouldering the cost? What a Noynoy scam!

The Cojuangco-Aquinos always get it all — and at the expense of the Filipino people. Recall that it was the Filipino people who paid for the clan’s dollar and GSIS loans, and not the clan for the hacienda.

Talk of behest loans: Recall too, that Ninoy Aquino, hailed as a hero and martyr, not only was into influence peddling with then President Ramon Magsaysay to get the hacienda, and have the government guarantee the loan, while screwing the farmers.

Recall too, that the “sainted” Cory Aquino screwed the farmers anew by exempting her hacienda from agrarian reform and screwed them further with her SDO. It was also Cory and the Cojuangcos, then allies of Gloria, who were able to get the government to pay an exorbitant price for the raw land, and get the private interchange for free, to boot!

The plot set by Noynoy and his clan goes this way: With Corona impeached and — as Noynoy vowed — convicted by the Senate, and with the threat of impeachment against the majority of justices who do not go Noynoy’s way, in yet another hypocritical call for Noynoy to “reclaim the Supreme Court” for the people, the hacienda case is still pending.

With the justices either cowed or replaced by Noynoy justices, the new and subservient SC will now decide in favor of the Cojuangco-Aquinos.

Screw the people! That’s what the daang matuwid really means: Presidential powers are to be used for the total benefit of the Cojuangco-Aquinos.

It wouldn't be possible bec people now are vigilant and reclaiming Lucita is much bigger risk. The main issue is the grounds of impeachment they have file against CJ Corona
