i am a permanent resident in canada for 4 years now and currently living in ontario(eastern seaboard) and this is what i have experienced:
1. climate: there are 4 seasons: winter, spring, summer and fall. in the summer, temperatures can go as high 36 C and the days are longer( 4 am sunrise and 9pm sunsets). Winter is really cold( could go as low as -30 C) and the coldest months are january and february. my favorite season is fall, sure it rains but the changes in the colors of the leaves are awesome!
2. transportation: if you live and work in the city, you dont really need a car because everything is in walking distance and buses/subways/trains are only 5-15 minutes wait. but if you live in the outskirts like i do then a car is essential.
3.accomodation: highrise apartments and apartment buildings usually start at 600-800 dollars/month. it usually includes heating and water. electricity(or hydro as they call it here) may or may not be included. there are also basement apartments which are cheaper.
4.work oppurtunity: not to discourage the newcomers but most companies usually prefer applicants with "canadian experience". it is disheartening but there are ways to go around it. just be patient and be prepared for blue collared jobs but never lose sight of what you really want. there are agencies that help newcomers get started like finding jobs and helping you contact the right agencies. usually theres what they call a bridging course(school credentials and work experience are assessed by the regulatory board and they will determine if you have to take some extra courses or not). my friend had to take at least a year of courses before she was able to work as a nurse, she was hired and all her years of experience were credited. so be persistent. here in canada, its all about what canadian credentials you have. but there are lots of work to have if you are not choosy.
3.health care- basic health care is free. medical exams, laboratories, surgeries(all), dialysis, diagnostic tests(including catscans and mri), labor and delivery(including caesarian section) are all covered by the universal health care plan. medicines though are not free unless u are being confined in the hospital. extended health care like dental are not covered.
4. child care benefits- depending on the family's income, the govt gives subsidy to children up to 18 years old. the current govt also gives out 100 dollars each month for each child until the age of 6.
5. other benefits: maternity leave is up to a year. paternity leave up to 9 months. old age pension at 65 y.o. employment insurance(if u lose your job) up to 9 months. there are also free retraining and or career change benefits like free education courses or govt subsidized tuition if you lose your current job. Free english and french language course for all new immigrants.
6. education: education up to highschool is free. doesnt matter if its public or catholic. college and university(after highschool) is not free though but theres a govt program that lets you borrow money for your degree and then pay the govt back when u have a job. right now theres also whats called a new grad initiative program where in the companies will take ojt/trainees for 6 months and the govt will shoulder thier wages. french immersion classes are also available for gradeschool to highschool.
7. language: english and french are the official languages but you dont have to learn them both. only in the province of quebec that you really need to learn french as most of them dont speak english.
8. culture: if you go to major cities, you could see that its realy quite diverse. almost like the united colors of benetton.. hehehe... u see indians, caucasions, chinese, pinoys, blacks, etc... if im not mistaken, pinoys are among the top 5 immigrants in canada.
9.food: very diverse, there are chinese, filipino, west indian, east indian, vietnamese, korean, italian, french, japanese etc.. so you can actually be adventurous and try all these...
10. nightlife: in big cities, theres pinoy bars and karaoke bars. dont expect too much though, some are quite cheesy and really needs an upgrade but what the hell, your with fellow pinoys so just enjoy.
canadian bars are also okay, some you need to be in the guest list so that you wont have to line up but well, its just like our sosyal bars, its just that you are the foreigner... hahaha...
