For general purpose, I think mas ok ang 24-105 kay naa man IS and it has a longer reach. Especially with the newer bodies karon with good ISO performance, you could compensate the 1 stop difference by increasing your ISO to get a decent shutter speed.
Also if you are not really into action or moving subjects, then I would prefer IS rather than the 2.8. With IS+ F4, you can still get a decent shot upto 2-3 stops slower than what you could get with the 2.8 as long as your subject is not moving.
When I travel, I use my 24-105 coz I rarely use 2.8 as I need 5.6-8 to get wider DOF.
Just my opinion though.

I started this thread way back last year. I bought the 24-105mm f/4 (see pics above) and used for about a month then sell it and bought the 24-70mm f/2.8....
now the 24-70 is on my cam 85% of the time....murag ning pilit na....hehehehhe!
