hehe I pretty damn sure that the one I caught before in bohol is a wolfsnake, too bad, I dnt about it yet so I mistook it for an elapid (thinking of the ph.coral snake or h.calligaster) so I free'd it ..

Good thing you didn't try keeping one yourself, as this is one helluva bugger to keep. You need a constant supply of Calamaria spp. for tukker...
I saw one before, it so happen that it is actively feeding on a baby tokay gecko in a middle of the day, like I open'd its hide and boom! it is swallowing a poor lizard hehe...I thought kasi, h.calligaster 's are nocturnals-

Are you sure it's a Hemibungarus calligaster you saw eating a Tokay? You must be mistaken... As i mentioned here not long ago, H. calligaster feed only on Calamaria spp.. So that rules Tokay out of it's menu, and rules out the Coral snake as the snake you saw.

I've also mentioned here the word "MIMICRY". Does the genus Cylindrophis rings any bells? How about the Liopeltis spp.? Unless you're specifically sure, this all here's jsut speculations and awfully wrong on the Genus tukking on Tokays.

Like i said my young Padawan, it takes a little more observation to correctly identify and learn...

----Alright then, let's see who of you here did your "snake homework".---

    1. What's the difference between the genus Calliophis and the genus Hemibungarus?
    2. Are Sea snakes and Sea Kraits one and the same? Or are they all together different??
    3. What's the binomial name of the genus Elaphe?

    Tricky, tricky herpy.... hehehe!!

but I was certain of the snake, 100% h.calligaster, I'll PM a picture ok? Maybe I was wrong with the Tokay gecko instead... perhaps, all geckos that are colorful "for me" in cebu are tokays from my eyes.. though I was young back then, so I can't possibly more specific on what it ate back then..

Again, let me itinerate AGAIN... H. calligaster are specialized feeders! Meaning, they ONLY eat specifics for their diet. And H. calligaster are OPHIOPHYGOUS, they only EAT snakes. And not only do they eat snakes, they only feed on a specific genus of snake, the Calamaria spp. and nothing more...

This is one particular reason why you don't see H. calligaster in captivity. Not unless you have a constant supply of Calamaria spp. to feed it with!

My eyes don't lie though, hehehe... besides im no herpetologist that's why there are no justifications whatosever in what I think I saw back then.. so there's no point to argue with, maybe I was wrong or you are wrong or whatever..no need to scold me, hehehe not unless ,as a herp guy, you studied specifically on h. calligaster alone BUT as I describe the snake, with no particular scalations or whatever jargons used in biology, as timid, hides on rocks and has a black band coloration with white stripes in each center of those bands while hidden in its belly are dangerous colors of black bands with white stripes inside those band of black, sandwhiched with red segments.. I dnt think , if ever there is, a mimicry specie as identical as this one? And on to this year, we caught another one again.. severley stabbed.. but I was lucky that my friend took a picture into it..

    PM'd u by the way

let's be friendly on our sides of approach okay? like I said, I don't understand terms or jargons as what herpetologists do talk about.. im just a commoner hehehe

Correcting you on proper info is NOT scolding. I'm even infact sharing you the proper correct info. So don't take it the wrong way!

    Again, it's Mimicry..

And here's the old adage on venomous snakes. This is particularly accurate:
"RED to BLACK, venom LACK.. RED to YELLOW, KILLS a fellow.."

And yes, i do specialize on Ophidians, particularly on ELAPIDS and Ophidian Toxicology. I'm no bloody herp_doctor for nothing..

    PM'ed you too..

    Cheers mate!!!

I heard that before at the discovery channel, the host was capturing what I thought was a coral snake, and he said that there are other snakes mimicking the corals snakes because they are venomous. Like what you've said. "Red and Black, Venom Lack... Red and Yellow, Kills a fellow.

Guess i believe everyone here now knows about mimicry and uderstand its importance.

Shall we tackle another subject, another topic perhaps, about snakes??
