Speaking of construction projects in Cebu, President Arroyo herself has just inaugurated a P585.7 million irrigation project there, in Carcar-the the Can-Asujan Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP), one of the priority infrastructure projects of the administration to boost the livelihood of hundreds of small rice and vegetable farmers in this municipality. Infrastructure projects such as these have always been on the agenda for the administration, the SRIP dam and reservoir is located in Carcar, about 40 kilometers away from Cebu City. The project will irrigate 772 hectares of farmlands in 12 barangays in this municipality. Aside from merely providing irrigation to the surrounding farms, the SRIP reservoir is now also a major source of income for the residents here who are into fish cage culture and other agriculture-related endeavors. In fact, back in June 2004 when she visited Carcar to lead the groundbreaking rites for the SRIP, the President briefed local leaders and residents on her vision to improve the living conditions of the people here through the implementation of the project. Hopefully, this would serve to quiten down, even just a little bit, those who are constantly calling the President self-serving and other such unfairly derogatory terms.
