    Default Re: difference between one sided memory module from double sided

    just a little info on one-sided and double-sided ram...

    the double-sided ram has memory chips found on both sides of the ram...the computer looks for data one side at a time, thus, it cannot "see" all the data in your ram at one time...it needs to switch sides to look for data...the memory chips used in these types of ram are low density memory chips...

    the one-sided ram on the other hand has all its memory chips on one side..the memory chips used on these types of ram are high density chips which can store twice the amount of data than low density chips thats why they are found only on one side... thus, "theoretically" it takes less time for the computer to look for data because it does not switch from one side to the other...it sees all the data in your ram at one time...

    BUT in reality, you cant really see the difference in performance between the two(double-sided and one-sided)..or if there is any difference, it is minimal and unnoticeable...

    when you opt for dual channel configuration, you should have similar rams(i.e. both should be double-sided or both should be one-sided)..your rams should also have the same timings, and same capacity...based on my experience, dual channel configuration cannot be used if one ram is one-sided and the other is double-sided...

    hope this info helps....

    how come i placed my rams, one is one-sided and the other is double-sided, and they run in good condition and no problem whatsoever. once i start my cpu, my bios can read both rams 256+512= 768mb....

    @wiltan80
    It really depends on the mobo. I tried myself with that config years ago. The computer does run, but my games normally crashes somewhere in the middle of playing it..

    I tried reinstalling the drivers on my video card.. It still crashes. The only solution I found out was to remove the other ram.

    it really depends on the mobo...some mobos dont accept a single-sided/double-sided configuration while others allow it....some even allow a single-sided/double-sided configuration to run in dual channel mode(as long as both rams have similar timings and capacity(MB/GB), of course)...

    mine, i once had a single-sided 512mb kingston and a double-sided 512mb kingston...i had to sell my single-sided ram and buy a new double-sided one coz dual channel wont work in my mobo when using a single-sided/double-sided configuration even if my rams are of the same timings and capacity...

    so in terms of speed, double sided and single sided walay diff?
    in terms of compatibility, it depends on mobos?
    but if mobos support both double sided and single sided,no probs in terms of speed and also in compatibility?

    korek.

    and i prefer to run a dual channel mode using a paired module just to be safe. that is what i'm doing with my current rig.
