Thread: Halo: Reach

  1. #31

What I would like to see Bungie do for Halo Reach's multiplayer team based games though, is make it that it's Humans (Spartans) vs. Covenant (Elites). When it comes to it's multiplayer, previous Halo titles have always stuck to the same old Team Red vs Team Blue scenario, with each team consisting of either Spartans or Elites or a combination of both. Now nothing wrong with this I know, but it doesn't feel like the multiplayer is an extension to the story. Spartans killing each other is not something that happens on the Halo universe, so you feel like you're playing a simulation (in context to the Halo story) everytime you hop in online.

Other big game shooters in the past and present have made that distinction when it comes to online team based games and have used characters from either you played with or against with from the single-player campaign. Earlier Call of Duty games for an example uses the Allies vs Axis scenario, and recent Modern Warfare titles puts you on either the militia team or the Rangers. Tom Clancy titles have always been bout terrorists/extremists vs. an elite force. Gears of War online puts you on either the human COGs or the Locusts. So Bungie could really mix it up a little here. Imagine if you end up on the Covenant Elite side when you go online. You've got access to Covenant weaponry that the Spartans don't have access to during spawn right away, and vice versa.

So I'm kinda hoping it ends up that way. If it doesn't then no big deal. I'd still play the game.

Can Bungie Counter Modern Warfare 2 in Terms of Popularity?

With Halo 3, Bungie has been about on par with the past two Call of Dutys in terms of online activity, and is well aware that the keys to a successful multiplayer are well-crafted maps, a set of weapons that work much like a game of rock-paper-scissors, and constant community support.

Only, the way I see it is that Bungie certainly know how to build a game oozing with quality that has an undeniably solid net code and potentially hours of replayability for gamers to sink their teeth into, but they seem to either completely misunderstand what draws players to games like Modern Warfare 2, or they see it as a style of multiplayer they aren’t interested in emulating.

If there's one thing Bungie could learn from Infinity Ward, make it that every piece or armor, weapon, weapon attachments, and equipment are totally unlockable by just playing the game and putting the effort.

Please no more of that silly... "Yes! You can haz Recon. But to get it, you need to play a multiplayer game with your buddies naked, no weapons...just purely hands-on, and you need to be playing it on a specific day of the month."

yeah i agree... the ODST campaign is so short.... i think if i accumulate all my game time with ODST it would add up to around 5 hrs lng of gameplay.... :O

Based on these screenshots, this game is looking like Gears of War (not that there's anything wrong with that). I just hope though Bungie won't go overboard with the gray palette, and the Vaseline coated terrain.

Halo: Reach a special feature on Edge magazine!

Arriving with subscribers and in UK newsagents tomorrow, E211 exposes how Bungie is closing a chapter in its development history.

Halo: Reach is, as its principal team members tell us, the culmination of all the studio's work on the series – the ultimate expression of the mix of technology and design which has made Halo a benchmark for console FPS.

We met with the leads from each department making up Bungie's team and saw two levels to find out how Reach could well be the best Halo yet released for our expansive feature, and found out why the process has made the team go full circle and look for inspiration at the series' beginning – 2001's Combat Evolved.

For the full story, pick up the magazine, but as a bonus look out on Edge Online from tomorrow for a series of excerpts from our interviews which will look at specific elements from Reach.

It's what Reach looks like before the fall of Reach. Habitable and full of grayish rocks, before the Pillar of Autumn blew up too.

If this game wants to excel in graphics then they should start at the terrain. The terrain still reminds me of Halo: Combat Evolved.

Halo: Reach will 'upset hardcore fans' - Bungie

Bungie has admitted that elements of Halo: Reach 'will upset hardcore fans' of the series' source material.

However, the studio has pledged that the majority of game will 'delight' die-hard fans of book The Fall Of Reach - and that it had made the title with the affection for the novel very much in mind.

In an interview with Edge, Bungie execs said the game 'played' to events in the book.

Executive producer Joseph Tung said: "There might be certain things the hardcore fans will take issue with, but there will be other things that will make them absolutely delighted."

And creative director Marcus Lehto added:

"We are very sensitive to the Halo canon, and we are careful not to be stomping on the Halo timeline. We're playing to the events of the book, and while it's not the gameplay version of the book, that story is taking place in the background. We're following one isolated part of what's happening on Reach."
