Drake and other early extraterrestrial-life enthusiasts, including Carl Sagan, arrived at a value for N between 100,000 and 1,000,000--still only about one technological civilization per million stars in the Milky Way, which astronomers believe contains some 200 billion stars.

    source: Drake Equation

    high probability?

finding extraterrestrial life out there is not impossible, but the probability is very low. even lower than chances of winning the lotto..

but on another thought, we would need to define what *life* is per se. In my "ever-continuing" research on biology, I've come across this really fascinating book on Astrobiology.. Life Everywhere: The New Science of Astrobiology, it opened new frontiers for discovering life from where my previous perspectives on biology were. David Darling discusses different theories on what kind of life we may find out there contrary to our conventional notions of what life is. It could be that we are missing all these other life forms.

but going back to the low probability approach, an analogy I've come across is similar to that of having a credit card number. the chances of you inputting a random credit card number in the hopes of using another's are close to less than 0.00001%. With our current technology on finding life out there, whether its an extinct civilization or still highly thriving, are very inefficient. we'd need to prep our *space eyes* more to eventually find signs of life out there.. a number of space projects have already been generated just for this purpose. the recently launched kepler telescope sole task is this. (or one of its consequential tasks.. ).. conspiracy talks..

Yes, I agree with this. We are carbon-based life forms, thus we'd normally expect "other life" to also be carbon-based, because it would be counterintuitive for us to think of other forms of life. Consider silicate-based (crystalline) life forms...they wouldn't need water (which we think, is essential to all forms of life)...

...and thus, if one day, we landed on a planet full of crystals, we would then declare the planet "dead" because all we found were crystals and there was "no sign of life".

In a small (indirect) way, I work for NASA (they are one of our clients)

    Avatrian: Home

I am also a member of the Orbiter Space Flight Simulator community, some members of which are in fact, NASA, ESA and RSA employees.

You can find my name in this page (do a page search for "Rodion Herrera"):

Actually that's not quite correct. There's actually an iStoryan who has much much better credentials than me in topics related to astronomy and space exploration, but I'm sworn to secrecy as to his/her handle/account name. Hopefully, he'll/she'll stop lurking soon and make posts himself/herself.
