If there's one person who could've gone to greater heights if Michael Jordan was not present, it's Karl Malone. IMO, Karl Malone is the next best to Jordan but unfortunately, both existed at the same time. "The Mailman" is a perfect combination of strength, speed and consistency. For almost a 1 1/2 decade, Malone was a consistent 20 points per game performer and averages a consistent double-double and hits about 50% from the field. He's also among the league's very rare "ironmen" along with fellow Jazz teammate John Stockton. Speaking of elites, it was Malone who turned the Jazz into an elite and one of the few feared teams in the NBA. Utah barged in consistently in the playoffs with Malone despite having a not so good line-up compared to West teams like Houston, Phoenix, Seattle and even Portland during the 90's.
Speaking of "heir", I'd pick Shaquille O'Neal as the closest to Jordan. O'Neal's got his own share of NBA titles, individual awards won and also has created much hype during his NBA and basketball career. Both Jordan and O'Neal are dominant in their own ways. And also, both are not just basketball icons, they're also role models both in and out of the court.
