"Daddy, can you tell me another story before I sleep?" A sleepy Andrea tried to cover a yawn.

It was hard to say no to those cute little eyes, but he answered gently, ""What is the magic word, sleepyhead?"

"Please Daddy?" Andrea pleaded with the sweetest smile, and it was a done deal.

"Okay. There was a young girl whose parents didn't have a lot of money. This, however, did not make the girl angry or sad. She was always happy no matter what the food on the table was. One day, the little girl was walking on the street, hoping to find some bottles or cans that she can sell in order to help her mother. She thought finding a few coins on the street would even be better!" Dave paused and glanced at Andrea only to find out that his little girl had already fallen asleep.

Dave smiled gently, welcoming the warmth that he always felt whenever he looked at his daughter. His daughter. She is the most important thing in his life, and her happiness means more to him than his own. This is the essence of fatherhood. When you become a father, the source of your happiness becomes centered into your children. Weekly night out with friends had become a thing in the past, except for meaningful celebrations.

Dave kissed Andrea goodnight and went out of her room. Jane was still in the bathroom, brushing her teeth probably. Dave quickly changed into his pajamas and climbed to his side of the bed. He picked up the book he had been reading, and noticed his phone.

    Casey.

He can't help but sigh deeply. He closed his eyes in an effort to brush away the image of Casey from his mind. But he guess he was in too deep already to be able to forget the way she would laugh at his silly jokes. Or the way her hair feels while she lay on his shoulders. For the life of him, he cannot forget the way Casey smiles sadly whenever he had to leave.

"It has been eight years, Dave. When will I be good enough for you?" It was then that he realized that Jane was standing by the bed, looking at him. He must have spaced out while thinking about Casey. Well, this was not the first time.

Dave cannot utter a single word in reply to what his wife had just said. He can only stare at Jane, his mind telling him to do the right thing, while his heart was beating for another woman.

"I-I'm sorry Jane. I was just thinking about the business meeting I'd need to postpone in order to be at Andrea's contest," he was babbling and he knew it. "I thought I can just send Eric instead of having to reschedule it."

Jane sat down on the bed, crying silently. "All these years, I had tried my best. But I can never compete with her! It was always her, right Dave? It has always been Casey."

Dave wanted to shout, Yes, It has always been Casey. No matter how I try to forget, no matter how hard I try to teach my heart to beat for you, I just can't!. But he can't do that to Jane. She had been nothing but the perfect wife, the perfect mother to Andrea. This was too cruel.

Dave went to Jane and embraced her tightly, forcing himself to be the perfect husband as well. "Hush now darling..." He brushed away the tears that were still falling from her eyes. "I got distracted, but I swear Casey belongs to the past. You and Andrea are my everything now"

They remained that way for a long time, Jane sobbing into Dave's shoulders, and Dave massaging her back. Just the way a husband and wife should be - soothing each other, drawing strength from each other..

"I love you Dave. I love you so much."

With a lump in his throat, Dave answered, "I love you too Jane." And just like that, Dave cannot hold back any longer. Tears fell down from his eyes. For the first time in a very long time, Dave was crying because while he was saying those words to Jane, he was picturing Casey. And that was just too messed up.

Default Confessions of the Other Woman (Part 5)

They say that the kind of love that sweeps you off your feet only comes once in a lifetime. But what if this isn't true? What if all of us are given more than one shot to find true love, but we just got too busy moping around a lost love to realize that somebody else who is more deserving is waiting.

And yes, Dave had swept Casey off her feet from the very start. Well, not really. Casey sighed as memories of the first time they met inevitably flashed in her mind.

    ******

"What is a pretty girl like you doing in a place like this?" Casey suppressed a chuckle upon hearing this. She stole a sideways glance and saw a naughty-looking guy oozing with misplaced confidence. He even had his hand on the girl's arms, acting like they had known each other for a very long time.

    Smack!

    Uh-oh.
Casey inwardly flinched at the sound of a slap that was loud enough for her to hear. She looked up in time to see a petite girl with shiny black hair gather her books and leave the library with one last scornful look at the arrogant guy.

The guy seemed to forget how to close his mouth, and he was still stroking the side of his face that came in contact with the fierce girl's hand. Way to go girl! Casey silently cheered as she laughed.

"Well, at least someone is enjoying this," Casey realized she had laughed aloud when the guy said this.

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to eavesdrop," Casey reasoned out. "But we are in the library, and it's hard not to hear your pickup line." She can't help but laugh again at the thought of someone using the already over-used line. It's not even a pickup line anymore. It had become a joke already.

And then the guy laughed. It took Casey a few seconds to register this since the guy had just been slapped hard.

"That was the first time I used the line, actually. And obviously, the last," the guy explained, wiping his eyes that had become wet from laughing.

"It's the wrong place to use that line. This isn't a bar, you know," Casey quipped the obvious.

"I know," the guy said with a faraway look in his deep brown eyes.Yes, they're brown. Or black. Dark brown, perhaps? And why should she care what color his eyes were? Casey felt uncomfortable looking at him. It was like intruding into someone else's private space. She went back to reading her book, and did her best to ignore the guy who was still lost in his own world.

"That was the line my Dad used on my Mom thirty years ago," Casey slowly looked up from her book and looked at him, "I thought I'd try to see if it would still work. Well, there's no harm in trying, right?"

Casey wasn't sure if he was talking to her or to himself, but she said, "Except that there's still a red mark on your face." And while she was saying that, she realized she felt sorry for him.

"Yeah, well, I guess I deserved this," the guy said with a deep sigh. "By the way, I'm Dave. Are you a freshman?"

"Yep. Fresh from highschool. Name's Casey," she said, smiling at him.

"Casey," Dave repeated, as if testing the sound of her name on his lips. "Do you want to grab a coffee or something?"

Casey's heart fluttered a little at the invitation. Just a little. "Is that another pickup line from your parent's book?"

"No," he laughed. "That was an original."

"Good to know," she replied. "I don't know if you can stomach a second rejection in less than thirty minutes, but I have to say no. I got midterms early tomorrow, and I have to study."

"Ouch," Dave said, feigning a hurt expression on his face. "How about your number?"

Casey debated with herself whether to give out her number to this stranger or not. She glanced at Dave and saw him looking expectantly at her. She can't see a trace of the over-confident guy who was slapped. She can only see his brown eyes. Dark brown.

"Okay, but you can only call me after midterms," she said while tearing a piece of paper from her notebook and writing her number on it. She handed it over to a smiling Dave, and for a brief moment, their fingers touched. And that was when Casey knew that she wanted to see him again.

    ******

The phone rang, shaking Casey out of her thoughts of the bittersweet past. She hurriedly picked it up. Let it be Dave. Let it be Dave. She chanted silently, feeling foolish.

    "Casey here."

"Hello dear! What are you doing in your house on a Saturday?" Casey sighed. It's not that she didn't want to talk to her mother. She just wanted to hear from Dave so much, that the disappointment was almost crushing.

"Hi Mom. I just finished my laundry and some household chores," she lied. The truth is that her laundry is piling up, and her house had seen better days. For weeks, she just didn't feel like doing anything. She didn't even want to eat, or take a bath. Gross.

"Well, I hope you're okay. Your sisters are coming over for lunch tomorrow," Mom said. "Do you think you can come and visit too?"

"Of course Mom. It had been a couple of months since I last saw you all," Casey said, realizing that she missed her family.

"You sound distracted. Is your boyfriend there with you right now?" As always, her Mom was fishing. She didn't know anything about Dave, and it hit Casey so hard that Dave doesn't even count as a 'boyfriend'.

"There's no naked man walking around my house Mom, if that's what you're asking," Casey smiled sadly into the phone.

"Well, you can't blame me for hoping that there might be one," Mom said. "As I said, I want fifty grandchildren from all of you." They laughed together and talked for a few minutes more.

"What are you going to do for the rest of the day?" Mom was asking.

"Well," I think I'll stay in my room and cry for an hour or two. Then grab some ice cream. Or maybe I will have ice cream first then cry. "I'm going to watch a movie with a couple of friends tonight," Casey said. They said goodbye and hang up after a few minutes.

There is no movie to watch, actually. And she didn't feel like calling her friends. There was only the thoughts about Dave and what they once had, and what they can no longer be.
