If you have lots of spare money, the best is to invest in MFs and open a stock account as well. Why?
MFs invest in different securities such as stocks and bonds. Bonds generally perform more conservatively or in other words, lesser than stocks. In a bad market, bonds may serve as a hedge because they go down slower than stocks. Stocks are more volatile, bonds are less. The slow performance of bond may either slow down the growth of your equity but at the same time can keep your equity from falling fast in a bad market.
If you go straight to stocks, you can also diversify by picking 3-5 stocks. This is very ideal in a bullish market (just like what we're having right now) because stocks can give way higher gains than MFs provided that you pick the right companies, and buy and sell at the right time.
Ingon ani na lang. If you don't have time and knowledge in stocks, settle with MFs. After all, though mutual funds may do slower than stocks, they still give very good gains. You can never go wrong in both as long as you do it for long term.

MF-- in the long run, u will pay 2/3 of your original investments. Of course, ok gihapon coz U are paying for the management's expertise. I have MF but gamay ra coz I'm to stingy to pay for the management fee. 1.25 percent is a lot for me. Haha. Since I know how to invest in stocks after months of studying, I now put a lot on stocks more than MF.
I think naa gi quote ang one of the experts about management fee sa MF. He said na you better off investing in Index stocks rather than MF coz the management fee is too much in the long run.
But if you have a lot of money and don't have time to study the fundamentals of each and every stocks, then by all means invest in MF.
Sa COL na EIP ba, ang 5k is para ra jud na sa isa ka stock paid periodically, let's say quarterly, then lain na sad nga 5k para lain nga stock?
