For removal: I just use HiJackThis, Sysinternals, and Google.

Basically I use HiJack to list me all the startup programs and services that run on system startup, and run Sysinternals' Processes and threads' to figure out which are valid programs/.dll files. I then delete the rest. If I'm unsure, that's were Google comes in.

For virus/spyware protection: nothing beats 'YOU' as the best Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware tool. You can install everyone of these virus/spyware utilities on your system... but if you are still willing to click YES on a pop-up window just becoz it promised you FREE emoticons or free photos of Paris Hilton's beaver... then you fail.
