• Jefferson Codera Making Waves in California

For all the attention that the Miami Heat’s Fil-American head coach Erik Spoelstra gets, there are those that are working just as hard, albeit far away from the spotlight. One such coach is Cebuano Jefferson Codera, founder of Powerplayph, a basketball training camp based in Watsonville, California that is aims to develop young talent.

Codera is actually from Lower Tabok, Mandaue City but now based in the United States, where he trains kids of different ages with the nuances of the game learned from different training camps including that of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. However, his biggest achievement to date is helping Watsonville-native Adrian Zamora recover from knee surgery and get in prime shape in time to make the cut for the Mexican national basketball team that competed in this year’s Fiba Basketball World Cup.

Codera narrated that he met Zamora in a gym while he was training several 10-year old kids. Zamora, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound center was shooting on the other court but Codera noticed that the latter had difficulty walking. He offered to help Zamora and after several months of intensive training that included conditioning and ball-handling exercises, the latter made Mexico’s national team and then suited up for Halcones Rojos Veracruz in the Mexican League where he battled the likes of former NBA players Rolando Balkman and Adam Parada.

“It’s so hard to build a reputation here in America. I really had to make him believe me that I am a basketball trainer. I’m grateful he believed in me kay naayo man iya injured knee and na-develop sad iyang ball handling because of my training. That’s when my career as a basketball training started to became popular. Right now, I’m training with the top 10 high schools in the county. I’ve trained two high school MVPs as well,” proudly said Codera.

But Codera’s pride and joy remains to be his own basketball camp which he expects to bring back to Cebu early next year. He has already conducted clinics in Mactan in 2013 but promised bigger and better things next year as he brings Zamora with him to help in the training.

“The most important thing that I have accomplished here is to have my own basketball clinic. Nakakuyog na sad nako si AC Green (former NBA player) and NBA fit director Frank Lopez,” added Codera.
